The Acer mains adapter converts 240V AC current to 19V DC current which the laptop can use. It is also safer to have a low DC voltage in the laptop than to have 240V AC. All laptops have a hinge joint between the screen and the keyboard part of the laptop. Some hinges routinely fail - eg the dell Inspiron and the Compaq Presario. Other hinges can be damaged by dropping the laptop. Some manufactures refuse to sell the hinges and insist that the hinge is an integral part of the screen and as such the whole screen should be replaced. We can usually supply working hinges from new and used machines we break up for spare parts. Fluorescent tubes are embedded in the Toshiba LCD/TFT panel and are usually very difficult to replace - it is a job best left to technicians.
