Laptops usually have two memory slots. Some have memory chips soldered onto the motherboard. 256MB or higher is London recommended for most modern laptops using Windows XP operating system. Don t buy universal power supplies for your laptop. It is easy to reverse the polarity on some models and this will fry the motherboard - a very expensive repair. Compaq headphone sockets can be damaged by yanking the cable. The headphone socket can be replaced on most Compaq laptops. Usually there are 5 solder points on the motherboard and very delicate solder work is necessary. Pulling on the socket without melting the solder can cause the tracks on the motherboard to be pulled off and broken. Once the tracks are damaged it is very diffucult to reconnect the headphones socket. DVD and CD drives can be damaged by shock and movement when the disk is spinning.

Toshiba Motherboard
The computer won't switch on or will crash intermittently. Some video problems also require a motherboard repair as most video chips are soldered onto the system board. Our engineers perform component level repairs on most Toshiba motherboards. We can replace resistors, capacitors, transistors and also work on the major chips within your system. Our engineers have many years of experience and know how to fix most systemboard faults.

Toshiba VGA Video Graphics faults
The system starts up with dots or lines on the bios or intro screen. Graphics are distorted, blocked or pixilated. In some cases the system refuses to boot. Strange effects when windows or mouse are moved on the screen. All these effects can be caused by a faults related to the graphics chips. About 90% of faults can be repaired, the rest are caused by cracks on the motherboard and impossible to repair. Our Advanced Video Repair Technology enables us to restore full function to your laptop in most cases. Toshiba Power Jack or Socket
The laptop will not charge the battery. When the battery power runs out the computer stops working. We repair or replace power sockets where the power pin has broken or has become disconnected from the motherboard. In some cases the power connector makes a poor connection with the jack. This causes arcing which can generate enough heat to melt the dc jack and the power pin may become lose. It is best to get the power socket fixed before the battery is totally depleted as this can cause permanent damage to the battery.

Toshiba LCD Backlight & inverters
The laptop switches on but the screen remains dark. In some cases a faint image is visible on the screen. This problem can be caused by a faulty fluorescent light, inverter, video cable or a problem on the motherboard. Specialist tools are required to determine the exact cause of the fault. Backlights use very high voltages and it is easy to cause damage to the system if they are not correctly handled and installed. Our engineers can replace the backlight lamps in most TFT/LCD screens including the new xbrite panels. We also have access to most backlight inverters and cables. We can perform repairs on some very rare inverters. It is very easy to destroy an expensive LCD/TFT when removing/installing the CCFL. Our engineers are trained using broken LCD panels before they can work on a customer's LCD/TFT unit.

Toshiba LCD Screen
We can supply original Toshiba and compatible replacement LCD screens. In some cases only refurbished screens are available. We don't charge extra for installing and testing screens. Screens come in various sizes (measured diagonally in inches) and resolutions(XGA, SXGA, SXGA+, UXGA...) We need the correct size and resolution to provide you with an accurate quote.

Toshiba Keyboard
Most Toshiba keyboards are damaged by liquid spills and general wear. We can supply or install keyboards for most Toshiba laptops. We also repair keyboard connectors on the system board.

Toshiba CPU problems
Intel CPUs hardly ever go wrong, but are very difficult to diagnose. Some will crash on rarely used instructions and at certain temperatures. Unfortunately, hours of testing can be in vain if the problem instruction isn't executed. Overclocking a CPU in a laptop is not recommended as the cooling systems are designed to dissipate heat at normal speed.

Toshiba Overheating
We can install replacement Toshiba fans and heat sink parts. In cases where the original fan is not available, we can install substitute fans which will be equivalent or surpass the performance of the original fan.

Toshiba Hinge
Some laptops have a problem with the hinge becoming stiff. It becomes difficult to open and close the laptop lid. The plastics may also be damaged by a defective hinge.

Toshiba Charging problem
Charging problems can be due to batteries nearing their end of life, power supply problems or failed components on the motherboard (FET, MOSFET, Transistor, Diode or Capacitor).

Secondhand or Used TOSHIBA
Buying a used laptop is a risk. You may find that the battery does not accept a full charge or the laptop is unstable. Most secondhand sellers consider any laptop that boots into Windows as a working machine, even if it keeps crashing every five minutes. We strongly advise customers against buying used laptops with a DOA warranty as some faults are not immediately apparent.

BIOS update TOSHIBA
Many motherboards are destroyed by incomplete or corrupted BIOS updates. A BIOS update should only be performed if it is critically important. Don't do a BIOS update just for the sake of having the latest version on your computer. Ensure that your computer is stable before performing a BIOS update. Run diagnostics to check memory, hard drive, keyboard and video graphics. In 99% of cases a failed bios update will make the computer totally unusable so take a backup of your software and data too. Make sure that you have a good connection to your mains adapter and that the battery is fully charged. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER interrupt a BIOS update. Let it finish, even if it seems stuck and takes a long time.
