From Hardware: Power off the computer. Remove the battery pack and measure the voltage between battery terminals 1(+) and 6(ground). If the voltage is still less than 7.5 Vdc after recharging, replace the battery. To check the battery charge operation, use a discharged battery pack or a battery pack that has less than 50% of the total power remaining when installed in the computer. Vaio USB port sockets can wear out with regular use. We can replace these on most machines. Ports can be mounted vertically or horizontally and can be grouped. Most USB problems we have seen can be attributed to physical damage to the socket rather than electronics. USB ports supply enough power to drive scanners and hard drives - connecting your camera, scanner or ipod to a broken or damaged socket can damage the device.

All your programs and data are stored on the Park Royal hard disk in your laptop. Important HP data should be backed up on a regular basis. A few minutes copying your work to a CDRW can save hours of data re-entry. It might not be possible to repeat certain types of design and artistic work. Smart Park Royal hard drives will sometimes warn of imminent failure, other warning signals include a change in drive noise and intermittent Acer read errors. Any warning sign should be taken very seriously and the drive backed up ASAP, if possible. External USB or Firewire drives are an excellent means of Park Royal backing up important data. They are almost as fast as the internal data and can be used to transfer your data to a new hard drive if your current drive fails. Older laptops may have a restriction on the size of drive that can be installed. The problem with large scale integrated circuits is that there are millions on components inside them and just one failure may render the whole chip or PCB useless

Q. How can you offer a NO FIX - NO FEE service when most companies charge for running diagnostics and engineer time even when they can't repair the laptop or the parts are too expensive?

A. Our aim is to only profit from successful repairs. We are confident that our expert engineers will repair 95% of the laptops we receive at the quoted price. We give you an honest and realistic quote before you send us the laptop. We actively discourage uneconomical and impossible repairs being sent to us - this saves you time and carriage costs. 

Q. What happens if the cost of repair is higher than the phone quote?

A. There are a few cases where a laptop has suffered more damage than the initial diagnosis would suggest. The engineer will call you with his findings and provide you with a revised quote. You have the right to decline the repair. If you collect your laptop from our premises there is absolutely NO CHARGE.

Q. What is the delivery charge for returning the laptop?

A. We charge £10 delivery/insurance for laptops being returned to a UK mainland address. You can also arrange for collections from our premises and only pay your own courier service. 

Q. Some companies try to sell you a replacement laptop because they make bigger profits on sales than on repairs. Do you sell laptops? 

A. We are a repair company 100% - we don't sell any laptops, so there is no conflict of interest. We understand that moving to a different laptop can be a big inconvenience and very time consuming. Most users prefer to have their existing laptop, with all their favourite software and data, fixed. Most new laptops are now sold with Vista and users may need more time to learn the new operating system. Your old camera, scanner, printer or webcam might need new Vista drivers. Some manufacturers have no plans to create Vista drivers for older hardware.

Q. What is the time scale for repairs?

A. It really depends on the exact nature of the fault. Most backlights, keyboards, LCDs and broken power socket pins can be repaired in 1-2 days, when parts are in stock, otherwise 4-5 days. Video and motherboard faults usually take 2-5 days because extensive testing is required after repairs. Same day repairs need to be prearranged to ensure that engineer time and parts are allocated for the job - please call.

Q. What happens if my computer develops the same fault during the 60 day warranty period.

A. We have a very low returns rate, about 1 in 70 repairs. With all complex electronics there is a small chance that a fault may recur. We aim to give all warranty jobs top priority and fix the fault quickly. We also reimburse the postage for warranty returns. If the fault can't be repaired then a FULL REFUND will be given for the initial repair and the laptop returned to you. 

Q. Do you have a workshop in Park Royal?

A. We are based in Harrow Middlesex (North London), but we do service laptops and supply spare parts for customers all over the UK including Park Royal.
