Laptops usually have two memory slots. Some have memory chips soldered onto the motherboard. 256MB or higher is Moorgate recommended for most modern laptops using Windows XP operating system. Memory problems result in intermittent system crashes and Moorgate BSODS - blue screen of death. Although, memory chips are now very Moorgate reliable, problem chips do occur. Improper handling without static precautions can damage the chips. Overheating Compaq systems will also damage memory chips. With more people using Wireless Toshiba PCMCIA and Cardbus adapters for networking at home and at work, we are seeing a lot of laptops with damaged PCMCIA ports. The problem seems to occur when the laptop is carried in a case without unplugging the Moorgate wireless card. This causes the card to push into the port and break it or dislodge it from the socket on the motherboard. In some cased the Moorgate PCMCIA slot is soldered onto the motherboard and the force can pull the tracks off the pcb surface. Dislodged and broken ports can be repaired, but soldered ones may require a replacement of the whole motherboard. This expensive repair can be easily avoided unplugging the card before putting it in a carry case.

Q. How can you offer a NO FIX - NO FEE service when most companies charge for running diagnostics and engineer time even when they can't repair the laptop or the parts are too expensive?

A. Our aim is to only profit from successful repairs. We are confident that our expert engineers will repair 95% of the laptops we receive at the quoted price. We give you an honest and realistic quote before you send us the laptop. We actively discourage uneconomical and impossible repairs being sent to us - this saves you time and carriage costs. 

Q. What happens if the cost of repair is higher than the phone quote?

A. There are a few cases where a laptop has suffered more damage than the initial diagnosis would suggest. The engineer will call you with his findings and provide you with a revised quote. You have the right to decline the repair. If you collect your laptop from our premises there is absolutely NO CHARGE.

Q. What is the delivery charge for returning the laptop?

A. We charge £18+VAT delivery/insurance for laptops being returned to a UK mainland address. You can also arrange for collections from our premises and only pay your own courier service. 

Q. Some companies try to sell you a replacement laptop because they make bigger profits on sales than on repairs. Do you sell laptops? 

A. We are a repair company 100% - we don't sell any laptops, so there is no conflict of interest. We understand that moving to a different laptop can be a big inconvenience and very time consuming. Most users prefer to have their existing laptop, with all their favourite software and data, fixed. Most new laptops are now sold with Vista and users may need more time to learn the new operating system. Your old camera, scanner, printer or webcam might need new Vista drivers. Some manufacturers have no plans to create Vista drivers for older hardware.

Q. What is the time scale for repairs?

A. It really depends on the exact nature of the fault. Most backlights, keyboards, LCDs and broken power socket pins can be repaired in 1-2 days, when parts are in stock, otherwise 4-5 days. Video and motherboard faults usually take 2-5 days because extensive testing is required after repairs. Same day repairs need to be prearranged to ensure that engineer time and parts are allocated for the job - please call.

Q. What happens if my computer develops the same fault during the 60 day warranty period.

A. We have a very low returns rate, about 1 in 70 repairs. With all complex electronics there is a small chance that a fault may recur. We aim to give all warranty jobs top priority and fix the fault quickly. We also reimburse the postage for warranty returns. If the fault can't be repaired then a FULL REFUND will be given for the initial repair and the laptop returned to you. 

Q. Do you have a workshop in Moorgate?

A. We are based in Harrow Middlesex (North London), but we do service laptops and supply spare parts for customers all over the UK including Moorgate.

When the tube developes a fault the screen may give a pink or red hue to the image. We replace the tubes with high performance ultra white tubes which give a better image.
