A.
No - we have a very high success rate with repairing video faults on most
makes of motherboards . Manufacturers recommend a
replacement motherboard because it is more profitable for them. Typically
motherboards cost £300-£900 to replace. Small local repair shops also tend to recommend replacements
as they lack the technical skills and tools to perform the repair. Our
engineer are specialists with motherboard repairs and can repair most
video faults.
Q.
What causes the video graphics to fail?
A.
Users
demand desktop graphics performance from light weight, wafer thin laptops
with wide screens and manufacturers try to oblige. Unfortunately, these
types of laptops are more prone developing cracks on the motherboard, metal
fatigue on the solder joints and overheating.
Q.
What causes the solder joints to fail?
A.
Whenever the laptop is moved the circuit boards inside the machine flex
and bend very slightly. Over time, these movements cause solder fatigue
and eventually the joint fails to make an adequate connection for the
signals to pass. A lot of damage also occurs when a laptop is
dropped or roughly handled.
Q.
Why does the video chip overheat?
A.
With the advent of wireless networking, laptops are being used all over
the home, on sofas, carpets and mattresses. Often, users forget about the
air vents at the bottom of the laptop and the machine is starved of vital
cooling air. Heat builds up in the laptop and can cause it to crash.
Sometimes permanent damage may occur.
Please ensure that the laptop is rested on a flat hard surface to allow
airflow. Chess boards are perfect for 14.1" or 15" LCD laptops.
Wide screen laptops may needs larger surfaces.
Q. How can I tell if the fault
is cause by the VGA chip?
A.
The simplest way to determine if the fault is caused by the video graphics
chip or the LCD panel is to connect the laptop to an external monitor. If
the fault is replicated on the external screen then the cause is almost
certainly the VGA chip. Not seeing the fault on the external monitor does
not rule out the VGA chip. Certain VGA faults will result in a perfect
image on the monitor and still have a distorted image on the LCD panel.
Q.
Why do I get trails when I move the mouse?
A.
Video faults can cause the cursor to leave trails on the desktop. The image
is not corrected after the cursor has moved thus it leaves a trail. This
problem can also be caused by a corrupted video driver. We suggest that
you reinstall the driver to see if this will eliminate the problem. If the
problem persists then it is more likely to be hardware related.
