If the tests detect a keyboard problem, do the following one at a time to correct the problem. Reconnect the keyboard cables with mouse, keyboard and the main board. Keyboard or Touch-Pad Error. Error message of keyboard or touch-pad failure is shown or any key does not work. Try another good Keyboard or Touch-pad. Check for liquid spills on keyboard. LAPTOP DC JACK/SOCKET FAQ:

Q. Do I need to replace the motherboard?

A. No. Power circuits on most laptops can be repaired. Manufacturers will recommend a replacement motherboard because they can charge £300-£900 for the repair. Always check with our engineers before opting for expensive motherboard replacements. Our engineer are specialists with power/charging problems and can repair most faults.

Q. What causes DC power jacks/sockets to break?

A. The most common faults involve broken or disconnected DC power jacks/sockets. The power pin may break or become loose. The main cause is yanking the adapter cable by tripping over it or dropping the connected laptop. Rough handling and moving the laptop with the cable connected can also damage the DC jack/socket pin. Using an incompatible adapter can damage the socket.

Using the laptop on soft surfaces like sofas and mattresses can push the power plug up. This puts pressure on the Power jack pin and can cause it to become dislodged from the motherboard. We recommend that the laptop should always rest on a flat surface( a chess board is ideal).

Q. What causes the burning smell near the power jack?

A. In some cases the solder joints fail and result in arcing on the motherboard. You may notice a distinct electrical burn smell near the DC jack/socket. The laptop will work and charge the battery for a while but continued use will cause more damage as heat burns through the layers of the mother board. Eventually the power rail will short and the laptop will not power up or charge the battery. With a short circuit on the motherboard the repair is far more difficult and in some cases a replacement motherboard is the only answer.

Q. Why does the adapter light switch off or flash?

A. All laptop adapters/chargers are built with protective circuits to prevent overloads. Short circuits on the motherboard will cause the adapter to switch off or flash. We can repair most shorted motherboards by locating the short and replacing the faulty components.

Q. How can I tell if the fault is caused by the adapter?

A. The easiest way to determine if the power fault is caused by an adapter is to try an alternative adapter. We have most adapters in stock and customers are welcome to bring their laptops to us for a FREE trial. If your laptop fails with our adapter then the fault, almost certainly, lies with the laptop. If your laptop works fine with our adapter then you can buy it - average cost £39 (used/compatible unit - 90 days warranty).

Q. Why does the laptop work by wriggling the cable

A. Connection problems can occur on the motherboard or within the adapter cables. Sometimes you can get a reasonable connection by wriggling the cable or holding it at certain angles. This can work in the short term, but it is intermittent. There is no guarantee that your battery will be fully charged or that the laptop won't crash at a critical moment because the cable moved. It is best to get a new adapter or get the DC jack/Socket repaired. A poor connection without a charged battery will cause the system to crash.

DIY DISASTERS:  What to avoid.
It is tempting to try a DIY fix by buying a socket for £30-£40.  DIY can be fun and cheap, but you might kill an expensive motherboard. Motherboards are easily damaged when removing the old power jack. Replacing a power socket looks easy, but there is a danger of damaging nearby chips, capacitors, transistors and diodes.
With our LOW COST repairs it's just not worth the risk.

Here a customer used a very strong, but conductive, epoxy instead of solder and covered nearby components too - took us hours to remove the mess - NOT A GOOD IDEA.

This DIYer purchased the wrong type of socket and glued it on. Every time the adapter was connected there was a short circuit. He tried to remove it but the glue had set and there was a delicate capacitor under the glue so the laptop was brought to us for repair. He wasted £35 on the socket (+£6 delivery) and nearly killed his motherboard.

We are getting a lot of laptops where repairs have been attempted by DIYers using inappropriate tools. Pulling off the broken power socket with a pair of pliers is not a good idea as it will damage the motherboard. Using a cheap £20 soldering iron, from Woolies, with a massive tip and no temperature control, will most likely result in a dead motherboard. Here are some examples of DIYer repairs.

Here a student let her friend "repair" the power socket on her Dell computer. He managed to hack the old socket off, but damaged the PCB holes. He gave up after dislodging a capacitor (pic 2) and burning other components. Sadly, we had to replace the motherboard which added over £160 to her repair bill. This could have been avoided by letting our trained engineers do the job.

Here the customer managed to break off a part of the motherboard and gave up the repair when he realised that he couldn't remove parts of the old broken socket. We saved this board as the damage didn't effect the electronics and none of the conductor tracks on the board were pulled off - a lucky escape.

Please ensure that you have the correct tools, skills and a basic knowledge of electronics before trying a DIY repair on your laptop.

DIY repairs should only be attempted if you can afford to lose your laptop, your software,
your eMails, your internet settings,
your music, your pictures and all your work.

With our LOW COST repairs it's just not worth the risk.

SKILLS & TOOLS:

With 20+ years experience we have the skills but without our specialist tools we'd be lost.

Needle next to soldering tip

We use micropoint soldering, with digital temperature control, to ensure that heat is applied just where it is needed.

Overheating components near the power socket can kill the motherboard.

We have developed custom designed tools to efficiently remove broken power jacks without damaging nearby components.

Some laptop repair companies use tools that are more suited to plumbing than high-tech electronics.

We invest in the best tools to get the best results.
