The main function of a London fan in a laptop is to cool the CPU. HP Processors can generate 65Watt of heat in a very small area. Imagine a 60Watt lightbulb with a surface area of one sq.cm - that would get really London hot. That is exactly what happens in your laptop computer - without efficient cooling the CPU will overheat and maybe burnout. New Intel processors have thermal protection. Most AMD London processors just get cooked. Manufacturers prefer to supply the whole heatsink/fan assembly.
